The Swope Art Museum, founded in 1942 in downtown Terre Haute, Indiana, was established through a bequest from Civil War veteran and jeweler Michael Sheldon Swope to celebrate American art. Housed in the historic Swope Block building—originally constructed in 1901 and later redesigned in a streamlined Art Deco style—the museum honors Swope’s legacy and lifelong commitment to the arts. Its permanent collection features over 2,000 works, with a strong emphasis on 19th- and 20th-century American artists, including Edward Hopper, Grant Wood, and Thomas Hart Benton. The museum also showcases regional talent, particularly artists from the Wabash Valley, and hosts educational programs, lectures, and an annual student art exhibition that began in 1967WhichMuseum. With free admission and a mission to engage and educate, the Swope remains a cultural cornerstone in Terre Haute’s arts landscape.
